HERBAL TEA FOR REFLUX

Herbal Tea for Gastritis and Reflux

The Terza Luna herbal tea can help those looking for a natural remedy against the burning and discomfort caused by gastroesophageal reflux.

Ingredients

The ingredients that make up our herbal tea for reflux are:

  • Juniper
  • Angelica
  • Licorice
  • Mallow
  • Linden

Thanks to the presence of linden, the herbal tea for gastric reflux also has mildly relaxing properties.

What is Gastroesophageal Reflux

Gastroesophageal reflux is a condition where gastric juices pass onto the esophageal wall, causing burning and discomfort. This passage is considered normal up to a certain limit, beyond which it becomes a pathology.
In fact, the esophageal sphincter is a muscle that regulates the passage of water and food from the esophagus to the stomach. When this passage occurs, some acids rise, and up to a certain limit, this is normal. When the amount of acids rising from the stomach to the esophagus is high, we notice it through a series of burning sensations and discomfort.

Symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux

The symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux can appear continuously throughout the day or intermittently. It can occur upon waking, after meals, at night, or only when lying down or bending forward. The most common symptoms are usually:

  • Burning behind the sternum
  • Acid regurgitation

Other less common symptoms may include:

  • Sensation of a lump in the throat with difficulty swallowing
  • Digestive difficulties, nausea
  • Chronic laryngitis, cough, hoarseness, voice loss
  • Hiccups
  • Asthma
  • Chest pain
  • Otitis media
  • Insomnia

Causes

Its causes can be various: poor diet, stress, malfunctioning of the esophageal sphincter, being overweight.
In addition to medical therapy, which includes antacids, proton pump inhibitors, etc., there are a number of plants that can help soothe acidity and regulate gastric secretion, which is why we decided to create an herbal tea based on herbs that can help with the discomfort of gastroesophageal reflux.

STUDIES AND BIBLIOGRAPHIC SOURCES

There are a number of plants that can help regulate gastric secretion. These are:

  • Licorice: A plant known for its significant anti-inflammatory and digestive effects. We cite a review where overall, Radix, Melissia, Glycyrrhizae, Mentha and Licorice were the most effective herbal products for managing VH in irritable bowel syndrome and dyspepsia.
  • Mallow: Often used for its content of emollient substances, mucilages, softeners, and protective agents. These are anti-inflammatory substances that act by contact, covering inflamed tissues to allow their regeneration.
    We cite a review where the techniques used in phytochemical profiling and the pharmacological activity of each compound were extracted from included studies, including in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies. The phytochemical analysis of Malva sylvestris revealed that the leaves and flowers are the most commonly used parts of the plant and contain various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, mucilages, terpenoids, phenolic derivatives, coumarins, sterols, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids. These phytochemicals are responsible for the numerous pharmacological activities of Malva sylvestris, such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, laxative, antiproliferative, and antioxidant properties.
  • Melissa: Melissa officinalis L. (MO), traditionally called lemon balm, is one of the lemon-scented aromatic herbs widely used in traditional medicine for its calming, sedative, and antiarrhythmic effects. Additionally, several studies have linked its therapeutic potential to its antioxidant properties. It is usually used for its anxiolytic effects to combat anxiety, but its primary use is digestive. It seems to be one of the best remedies against anxiety somatized in the stomach and intestines.
  • Anise: A remedy that has always been used and appreciated for its compatibility with the gastric tract, being antispasmodic, carminative, and digestive.

Herbal Tea

At Terza Luna, we thought of creating an herbal tea based on herbs that can help against the discomfort of gastroesophageal reflux. An herbal tea composed of: juniper, angelica, licorice, mallow, linden.

Preparation of the Herbal Tea

For the preparation of the anti-reflux herbal tea, just follow a very simple procedure that we will explain in this paragraph. First of all, we should use about 1 and ½ tablespoons of herbal tea per cup, equivalent to 4 g for 200 ml. To start, bring the water to a boil. Once ready, we can turn off the heat and infuse the herbs in the boiling water. Let it steep for about 20 minutes and our reflux herbal tea will be ready. We recommend consumption about 20 minutes before meals.

Tips for Combating Gastroesophageal Reflux

Although the anti-reflux herbal tea might be a good solution to the problem, especially due to its 100% natural ingredients from organic farming, it would be better to prevent such ailments. For this reason, we want to give you some practical tips to combat and prevent reflux.

  • Maintain a normal body weight;
  • Avoid foods that are hard to digest, irritating, and acidic;
  • No chewing gum and smoking;
  • Avoid large meals, especially at dinner;
  • Engage in regular physical activity.
