The astragalus, also known as Huang Qi which means "yellow leader", is one of the most documented and used plants in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is one of the 50 fundamental plants of Chinese pharmacopoeia and is considered by some as a tonic superior to Ginseng.

It is therefore an excellent tonic for the immune system, for some herbalists, in fact, it is the first plant to consider to tonify the Wei Qi, a term that in TCM is equivalent to the immune system.

It also rebalances body fluids and prevents retention, stimulates circulation, dilates blood vessels, lowers blood pressure, and acts as a heart tonic, increasing the resistance of tired hearts. It strengthens the spleen, lung, and kidney, the three organs that generate, nourish, and strengthen the Wei Qi.

Properties of Astragalus

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, astragalus is used for Qi deficiency of the spleen and lungs, loss of appetite, fatigue, diarrhea, weak voice, reluctance to speak, asthenia, sweating with minimal effort, lack of blood containment, bleeding, uterus or rectum. It prevents colds, stimulates diuresis, and treats superficial edema. It stimulates pus expulsion and tissue generation. Treat ulcers. It accelerates the recovery of people who have been treated with chemotherapy, improves functioning and increases the production of leukocytes, promoting bone marrow and adrenal cortex and increasing resistance to infections in these patients.

Contraindications of Astragalus

It can be taken for long periods every day (but not routinely) without unwanted effects; It is a safe plant, in fact, for its blood-thinning activity, those who are taking anticoagulant drugs should take it under medical supervision. Its use is also not recommended during pregnancy.
