JIN XUAN OOLONG Mr. Yiming

Taiwan. Oolong with 15% oxidation. Premium selection. Harvested in April 2023. Taitung County.

This tea was selected during our trip to Taiwan in May 2018.
Yiming is a young tea grower from Taitung County, on the east coast of Taiwan. His fields grow in not too high areas, where the Jin Xuan cultivar thrives. Absolutely organic cultivation, although not certified as it is too expensive for a small grower.

Jin Xuan is one of the most famous and used cultivars in Taiwan, especially because Jin Xuan oolong has sweet notes reminiscent of cream and milk that are incredible. A characteristic of the cultivar that those who grow and process the leaves must know how to highlight. Mr. Yiming has certainly succeeded. His Organic Jin Xuan is definitely one of the best we have tasted and we are proud to offer it to you. Difference between Milky oolong and Jin Xuan.

Many ask us: is Milky oolong and Jin Xuan the same thing? Or is Jin Xuan a flavored tea? Is Milky oolong a flavored tea? The answer is: When in the 80s Jin Xuan from Taiwan began to be very successful both in China and abroad (Europe, Russia, and the USA), the demand increased, raising prices. China then had the idea of using the leaves of a lightly oxidized oolong and flavoring them with milk cream. The name chosen for this flavored oolong tea was definitely appropriate and destined for success: Milky oolong. Such was the success of this tea that it completely stole the scene from Jin Xuan, putting it in the background. Today in Europe, the Chinese Milky is known and not the true one from Taiwan. But they are two different teas. Jin Xuan is a pure tea, Milky is flavored. The first grows in Taiwan, the second in China. The first has a delicate taste, the second is more intense and decisive... sometimes too much.

  • Cultivar: Jin Xuan
  • Altitude: 1400m
  • 15% oxidation
  • Harvest: spring 2023
  • Recommended brewing method: Gong Fu Cha
  • 6-7 infusions

This Jin Xuan is also characterized by its high altitude unlike many Jin Xuan that are grown at 200-300m. The altitude, due to the temperature difference between day and night, gives remarkable quality to the tea.
