The Pimentón, often known as smoked paprika, is a typical Spanish spice from Extremadura, a region in western Spain. What is Pimentón specifically? It is a ground spice obtained from the dried fruits of the sweeter varieties of Capsicum annuum, less spicy peppers with a thinner skin.
Commonly known as Spanish paprika, in reality, Pimentón de la Vera is a DOP product, widespread on the Iberian Peninsula since the sixteenth century, imported from America. The tradition of roasting and then jarring peppers in Spain is still very strong, both in the north and south, leading to a protected designation of origin for its Pimentón de la Vera from the Caceres region in southern Spain. The translation of Pimentón from Spanish is indeed pepper.
Pimentón comes in different variants: on Terzaluna, we have included in our online spices a sweet pimenton and a sweet and sour pimenton, which vary depending on the type of pepper used and their cultivar. The sweet pimenton is the classic one, while the sweet and sour one is a bit milder than a spicy pimenton but still extremely flavorful.
The meticulous preservation and high quality of this product allow the Pimentón de la Vera for sale on the Terza Luna shop to retain its organoleptic properties.
Pimentón de la Vera is a smoked pimenton, derived from several different varieties of peppers: Ocales, Jaranda, Jariza, Jeromín, and Bola, which are then cooked and dried over an open fire, a process that gives it that beloved smoky touch. The processing of pimenton, or smoked paprika, is very particular and lasts up to 15 days, as the drying involves hanging the sweet peppers and then smoking them exclusively with oak or beech wood.
This processing makes pimenton a smoked paprika with a very distinctive flavor that we proudly feature among our Spanish spices for sale online. Here, Pimentón de la Vera comes in powder form, in two versions of sweet and sweet and sour pimenton, both smoked, to be used on many dishes to impart a unique flavor. The smoked pimenton should be stored in a jar at room temperature.
The Pimentón in recipes can be used in numerous ways, such as to enhance potatoes or meat dishes, especially for a barbecue. An alternative to the flavor, quite intense but not spicy, of sweet paprika. It can be used in preparing a Pimentón sauce to dress salads, tacos, or in the typical Spanish tapas tradition for patatas bravas with a Pimentón flavor, one of the symbols of Madrid's culinary identity.
In Spanish cuisine, it is added to flavor many recipes; in paella, pimenton gives a spicy taste that complements the other ingredients and is the fundamental spice of chorizo, the typical Spanish sausage that gets its red color from Pimenton. It is also the central and essential ingredient of the famous Galician-style octopus.
Taking inspiration from Moroccan cuisine, where smoked paprika is widely used, you can mix pimenton in oil and create a pimenton aioli to dip bread or use to season meats or sandwiches.
Pimentón is a spice to be used in the kitchen for the benefit of your health and the happiness of your guests. The bright and intense red-orange color is capable of capturing the attention of those sitting at the table, making this product also highly decorative. But not only that: among the properties of pimentón, we find a strong antiseptic action, furthermore its consumption promotes blood circulation and digestive activity in the body, as well as having an important tonic action.
