Tandoori Masala: Indian Spice Blend

The tandoori masala is a blend of spices of Indian origin widely used in Indian, Pakistani, and Punjabi cuisine. It takes its name from the tandoor, the cylindrical or inverted bell-shaped clay oven typical of Middle Eastern and South Asian cuisine, traditionally used for cooking spice-based dishes like tandoori masala. Many typical dishes are prepared in this oven, characteristic because, in addition to cooking, it also gives a smoky flavor from the wood fire at the base. Among the most popular dishes are naan bread, roti, and the most popular: tandoori chicken.

Tandoori Masala Spices: Composition

The tandoori masala is therefore a mix of spices, similar to curry and garam masala. Tandoori means in fact 'related to tandoor', while masala means spice or spice mix. The difference between these blends lies precisely in the ingredients, and in reality, in tandoori masala garam masala is the base blend, to which various typical Indian ingredients are added such as fenugreek.

The composition of Tandoori Masala is made up of these spices:

  • Chili
  • Coriander
  • Cloves
  • Cardamom
  • Fenugreek
  • Cinnamon
  • Allspice
  • Ginger

Spice blends for making tandoori masala are not fixed, but vary from region to region. The ingredients of Tandoori Masala online at Terzaluna make this mix spicier than traditional Indian curry, giving your dishes the typical bright red color of dishes cooked with tandoori spice.

Tandoori Masala: How to Use?

Tandoori Masala has a very spicy flavor, and traditionally in Indian cuisine recipes, it is accompanied by yogurt to temper the spiciness, or coconut milk, to be added directly to the preparations.

The typical recipes of traditional Indian cuisine using tandoori masala are numerous, although the most traditional is indeed tandoori chicken masala, served either tikka, cut into chunks and cooked on the tandoor oven on skewers, or whole roasted, marinated in a yogurt and tandoori masala sauce before being cooked.

The uses of tandoori masala powder are not limited to meat and chicken dishes. This spice blend can also be added to soups, such as lentil dahl, and creates a very unique combination in fish marinades.

The tandoori masala sauce is very popular, which can often be found ready-made in supermarkets. In reality, with the tandoori masala mix for sale online, it is very easy to prepare it, combining white yogurt with the tandoori spice mix.

In addition to tandoori chicken, the tandoori masala sauce is therefore used to cook other ingredients in a similar way, and is widely used in vegetarian and vegan cuisine in the preparation of tofu tandoori, or Paneer tikka, a typical Indian cheese cooked in the tandoor in pieces after being marinated in yogurt and tandoori masala sauce in the manner of tandoori chicken.

For a more arbitrary use, the tandoori masala mix can be added to any preparation. Used in shrimp or salmon marinades, to enrich bread dough or in vegetable preparations, simply dissolve the tandoori masala powder in a little water to immediately add a fragrant and spicy taste to your dips.

Tandoori Masala: Recipes

The most famous and traditional Tandoori Masala preparation is tandoori chicken masala, an emblematic dish of Indian and Punjabi cuisine in particular. It is a dish of roasted chicken, previously marinated in a yogurt and tandoori masala sauce. It has a typical red coloration, due to the spices, although sometimes turmeric is preferred which turns the color orange.

Taking its name from the tandoor, the typical clay oven, chicken tandoori masala is clearly a baked preparation. However, this does not take away from the fact that the recipe for chicken tandoori masala has evolved over time and modern needs, so much so that today it is possible to find preparations of chicken tandoori masala in a pan or grilled.
