Origin: Sri Lanka, Greenfield tea estate Harvest: May 2021
The Ceylon tea is the tea cultivated in Sri Lanka, and it takes its name from the name given to Sri Lanka during British colonization. It is a particularly prized and pure black tea.
The Ceylon Tea Terzaluna comes from the beautiful Thotulagalla garden, owned by Greefield Bio Plantations Ltd. and located between 1500 and 2000 meters high on the magnificent hills of the Uva province.
The garden where Ceylon tea is cultivated follows a production process with a strictly organic certification, ensuring the quality of this black tea and its purity as Ceylon tea. In addition to the organic certification, Greenfield also has Fair Trade certification.
Everything in the Thotulagalla garden is done with respect for nature, and the trade of Ceylon tea is fair and supportive. Greefield Bio Plantations Ltd. uses the proceeds from the sales of this black tea to support schools, hospitals, and cultural centers (online more info on the project).
The cultivation of Ceylon tea in Sri Lanka is particularly rigorous, and a tea from Sri Lanka is always pure, as the importation of teas that can be produced on the island from other producing regions is prohibited. Therefore, it will be impossible to find a Ceylon black tea 'cut' with other teas of a similar nature since Ceylon teas are subject to strict quality standard controls.
The tea cultivation in Sri Lanka is flourishing and favored by the climate, with a history dating back to the second half of the 19th century when the island was under British rule and known as Ceylon, a name it maintained until gaining independence in 1972. Up to that point, Sri Lanka had been used as a land for coffee cultivation, however, a coffee rust epidemic compromised the plantations. In 1867, James Taylor, the manager of a coffee plantation, successfully planted tea seeds from India on 20 acres of land, giving rise to what we can de facto consider the first Ceylon tea plantation.
Ceylon tea became the lifeline for many coffee growers, who converted their plantations by starting extensive Ceylon tea productions, making Sri Lanka the fourth largest tea producer in the world, with plantations extending throughout the island and even up to 2500 meters in altitude. Sri Lanka is also known as 'the island of tea' and offers many varieties of high-quality Ceylon teas. In fact, black tea from Sri Lanka is one of the few teas in the world whose leaves are still hand-picked.
Discover Ceylon tea and other varieties of black tea in our loose tea section.
The organic Ceylon tea cultivated in this magical place has rich flavor notes, very intense thanks to the climate in which the plantations grow, to the point that it is recommended to drink it as it is, without adding any sugar or milk. Ceylon tea has an amber appearance and a slightly woody and velvety taste, and can be enjoyed at any time of the day, paying attention to the caffeine content, which is similar to that of regular black tea.
For the preparation of Greenfield Ceylon tea, we recommend serving it hot, leaving the leaves to infuse for up to 4/5 minutes in 100°C water.
Ceylon Tea Preparation:
Ceylon Greenfield black tea has draining properties, like all black teas, thanks to its caffeine content. Black teas in general have fewer benefits compared to green teas. This is due to their processing.
The black tea leaf, in fact, undergoes an oxidation process that causes it to lose some of the antioxidant properties that are more commonly found in green teas, especially in pure and preferably fresh ones, like our premium teas. Black teas, like Ceylon tea, are chosen for their intense and strong flavor. If you want to drink tea for its properties, we recommend choosing a green tea that has been harvested within the year, the latest available harvest.
