The gaiwan or zhong is one of the oldest tea objects and carries a long tradition dating back to the Ming dynasty (15th century), but even before that, tea was drunk in a large cup that also served as a teapot, as Lu Yu told us.
We have chosen a gaiwan as a gift for our community because it is an object that every tea lover should have at home, there is no better way to infuse Chinese green, black, and white teas than in a beautiful gaiwan. And we have chosen a very beautiful one! The theme of the grey heron 蒼鷺 often appears in the decorations of Chinese tea objects and is synonymous with elegance and grace just as tea leaves open and float on the water, so does the grey heron.
The gaiwan is a very simple object, it is used like a teapot, the leaves are placed inside and then water is poured over them. The necessary infusion minutes are waited and then the liquid is poured into a cup using the lid to stop the leaves.
The Gaiwan is made of porcelain and consists of a cup, lid, and saucer.
