Matero and Bombilla for Mate

Taste your Yerba Mate with the traditional accessories Matero and Bombilla

To drink the mate in the best possible way and take advantage of all its potential, you will need our mate tasting set: a Mate set composed of Matero plus bombilla.

The matero has a diameter of about 8-10 cm, made from the classic gourd, accompanied by the bombilla (straw) in stainless steel, measuring between 15 and 17 cm.

The matero or gourd for mate represents the lower part of the fruit of a particular gourd that is dried. Before being able to use your matero, it is very important to "cure" it.

How to take care of your Matero

Remember that before using the matero for the first time, it must be "cured": prepare a first infusion of warm water and mate exactly as you would if you wanted to consume it, the only difference is that the preparation will soak for 10-12 hours. After this time, discard the infusion, dry the matero, and it will be ready for use! This process serves to eliminate residues of the fruit pulp, which has a strong laxative power. It also helps to avoid any cracks in the gourd. It is important to remember that, after its use, the gourd must be dried and kept dry, to avoid the creation of fungi or mold.

Lagenaria siceraria: the plant from which Matero is obtained

A South American plant used for a long time even just for water storage. From the fruit of this plant, two types of containers for mate are obtained:

  • The calabash or matero
  • And the porongo

The calabash is the most well-known and represents the lower part of the fruit, the most rounded. The porongo instead represents the upper part. The porongo has several advantages over the calabash:

  1. It is more resistant, reducing the risk of cracks
  2. It does not risk creating mold or fungi inside because it is glazed
  3. It requires less maintenance
