Damask rose powder is highly appreciated by those who seek natural well-being. The charm it exerts is such because in the rose two energies coexist, as indicated by Ayurveda based on energetic quality: a warm energy, which influences by warming our spirit, and a cold energy, which can help reduce an excess of the fire element manifested by our body.
This dual soul makes the rose precious in different moments of our life, to bring balance especially in the area of the heart chakra, between our vital muscle-organ, lungs, circulatory system, and thymus, fundamental for the immune system.
Let's get to know this fascinating plant better, between history and myth, spiritual and therapeutic properties.
Already among the Egyptians, the rose was considered a mystical plant. For them, it was the symbol of "secret knowledge", consecrated to Isis, goddess of magical arts, life, healing, and fertility, the one who helped the dead pass into the afterlife.
The rose is also a protagonist in Greek mythology, where it appears as the result of the encounter between beauty, love, charm, strength, and spiritual luminosity. It is said that Chloris, the goddess of Spring, finding a lifeless nymph in the woods, asked Aphrodite, goddess of beauty and love, to bring her back to life. Aphrodite not having this power, transformed her into a beautiful rose. The god Dionysus then gave her the delicate perfume. Then the Charites goddesses added charm to the flower. Finally, Zephyrus, the god of the wind, gave her strength and Apollo, the god of the Sun, swept away the wind to let her be reached by the warm sun rays.
Like the lotus flower for the Easterners, the rose represents the highest degree of spiritual evolution, achieved through the purification of the self from egoistic impulses. With its sharp thorns and its intangible grace, it expresses the path to spiritual initiation, which starts from insidious difficulties to overcome in order to reach enlightenment and union with the divine.
The rose, the undisputed queen of flowers, is connected to the feminine, inner development, and the discovery of the divine within oneself and has many qualities useful for mind and body that we can make ours through damask rose powder.
According to Ayurveda, the rose mainly balances the sadhaka pitta, the pitta subdosha that governs emotions and how they affect the heart. It also allows better communication between sadhaka pitta and prana vata, the vata subdosha that governs the mind and breath with all the respiratory channels from the throat to the lungs.
Therefore, damask rose powder can be used to calm the heart and emotions and can help heal past pains, with the aim of moving forward and enjoying the present moment
This mystical plant has refreshing and astringent properties; and, in moderation, it is excellent for all three doshasvata, pitta, and kapha. It is particularly useful during the hot summer months for those who tend to have an imbalance of pitta (which can manifest as a burning sensation), however, it can also be used throughout the year, albeit in moderation, to intervene on lack of self-esteem, self-love, empathy, or maternal love.
Furthermore, there are medicinal properties of the rose that have positive effects on bhrajaka pitta, the subdosha of pitta that governs the skin and, thanks to its astringent qualities, it is a valuable ally for firming and smoothing the skin. Even in case of skin problems, rashes, and acne, the rose can help with its refreshing effect on the blood.
Although the rose evokes sweetness and romance, it is important to remember that its flowers have a sweet-bitter taste. This characteristic gives it a purifying action on the body, because the bitterness eliminates heat, dries moisture, and promotes the spontaneous elimination of toxins accumulated by our body, through the kidneys and intestines. On the other hand, its sweet part tends to attenuate acute reactions and detoxify the body.
The rose is also recognized for its tonic effect because it revives blood circulation and Qi, the core of vital energy in Chinese medicine.
Not only alternative medicine appreciates the rose, but science also recognizes several valuable qualities:
Nutrient, because it is rich in vitamin C and B complex vitamins, A and E, as well as calcium, magnesium, and potassium;
Refreshing, as it helps reduce any excess heat in the body, including skin and eye inflammations;
Balancing, especially for the female world, for its effects on hormones and its positive impact on restoring the menstrual cycle affected by amenorrhea;
Purifying, both for the skin and blood circulation, being connected to the heart and the cardiovascular system;
Soothing, as it helps manage physical pain with analgesic effects and emotional pain expressed through anger and sadness;
Disinfectant, thanks to its antibacterial and antiseptic qualities.
Discover all the properties of rose powder
This fascinating mystical plant can reach us in different forms.
Rose buds can be used in infusions and oleolites. Edible rose petals are suitable for decorating cakes and cocktails. Rose powder is the most versatile because it can be added to herbal teas, smoothies, and cappuccinos, as well as to creams for coloring - just half a teaspoon will be enough!
Given the versatility and richness of its properties, we can find rose powder both in the kitchen and in natural cosmetics.
For an infusion, we recommend dissolving 2 or 3 grams (about a heaping teaspoon) in 100-degree water, cover with a saucer and let it infuse for 7 minutes.
Rose powder can also be added to any other infusion, but in this case, we recommend moderating the quantity and timing: use only a tip of a teaspoon and only at the end of the infusion time, because the rose will give a sour inclination to your infusion and using too much could leave you with an excessive dry sensation on the palate, given its astringent characteristic.
Rose enhances its therapeutic properties in synergy with other plants. We particularly recommend combining it with sage, artemisia, calendula, or hops.
