Historical notes on cinnamon

Cinnamon could be one of the oldest spices; its origin seems to be in the island of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Emperor Shen Nung, to whom the discovery of tea leaf infusion is attributed, was the first to mention it in 2700 BC. Its first traces in the West are found with the Egyptian people who imported it from China. It is mentioned several times in the Bible, especially in Exodus (Ezekiel's Psalm, Exodus 30:23). Its use, like many spices in ancient times, was reserved for the wealthy, the journeys that such goods faced significantly raised the price. Today, fortunately, cinnamon is no longer so expensive. It is obtained from the bark of its tree, like cork. The bark is cut, dried in the sun, and it will curl up in the classic shape that we know. The most famous and commercialized types are two: Chinese cinnamon and Ceylon cinnamon. The latter is the most precious as its aroma is stronger and more persistent.

Uses and properties of cinnamon

Today, its essential oil is mainly used for this purpose, which has carminative, stimulating qualities, helps to open the airways. It is an excellent antiseptic and antibiotic.
