Oriental Beauty Oolong, Thailand. 70% Oxidation. Harvested in August 2023

Origin Chiang Mai, Thailand
Harvest August 2023

The Oriental Beauty oolong presents honeyed notes, slightly fruity. A tea to drink in large quantities, with little caffeine, refreshing and pleasant. A caress for our palate.
This Oriental Beauty comes from the mountains of Doi Ang Khan in Chiang Mai County, Thailand, reaching up to 1200 meters in altitude, always an important factor for the quality of the harvest.

We liked it very much for its delicacy; we tried to find an Oriental Beauty that was not too expensive, in fact, its price can go up to 40 euros per hectogram!

THE ROYAL PROJECT FOUNDATION

After the Second World War, Thailand found itself in a state of great poverty, the northern regions focused everything on opium cultivation, causing numerous addiction problems in the population; starting from the 70s, at the initiative of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Royal Project Foundation was born, an organization with the aim of changing the fate of those places and people through more sustainable (the jungle was burned to make room for crops) and diversified agriculture. Over time, it has proven to be a highly successful project that has also received international awards and support.
One of the products on which the foundation has focused is tea.

Northern Thailand is in the golden area of tea cultivation, as it borders the south of China and Laos, where the climatic conditions are perfect for the leaves of our beloved plant to grow healthy, giving a high-quality infusion.

MAIN CHARACTERISTIC OF ORIENTAL BEAUTY

The leaves of Oriental Beauty oolong are bitten while still on the plants by an insect: the Jacobiasca formosana, which produces micro traumas in the leaves, which are the dots you see in the photo. These are small spots of oxidation that will give the infusion a particularly sweet and honeyed taste.
The Dong Fan Mei Ren (Chinese name of this tea) is almost always an organic oolong tea, as the presence of pesticides would kill or drive away the insects, so precious for its processing.
